Sai is amazing. It was so much easier to work with that I had the courage to make a colored version of Inspired [link] Whenever I'd try to start in photoshop I'd only get a fraction of the lineart in then give up and exit without even saving because there are just so many lines! But with Sai and the amazing curving line that curves as you move along it was sooooooo much easier and smoother!

So I want to enter this in the local summer art competition so I need your critique. Any mistakes? Shading not dark enough? Suggestions for highlighting the hair more? General thoughts?

EDIT: (1st) Updated with some highlights and cleaned up a couple mistakes in the line art. Check back in case I update again.

(2nd) Moved to scrapbook.

As for a light critique - yes, I would definitely go deeper on the shading. The best advice I have received throughout my artistic career has been to not be afraid of shadows. Especially the hair behind her head, behind her arms, etc would be in deep shadow. In addition, there are many tutorials on clothing folds that can help you define the shadows of her dress more completely. Your textures are quite lovely, especially on the tree, and her hair has a nice airy feel to it. Consider adding a background, especially if you're going to enter it into an art competition (I don't know what the specific theme or parameters are, but regardless), you might as well go the extra step - it could add some context to the piece, tell a story - and as it is, given the light colors you use, the piece is a bit lost on a pure white background (especially the tree is hard to see, and a bit of a strain on the eyes to make out). At the very least consider adding a dark background, even if it's simply a solid color

TLDR: It's a very lovely piece, just go deeper on the shadows and try experimenting with darker backgrounds

Hope that helps!

Thanks a million. I tend to wind up making shadows too light and I can't seem to break the habit >.<;

This is gorgeus! Hmm I'm not sure how to critique it. I've never been good at critiqueing.
